"Stranger, you have reached a famous land,
Here, in green foliage, chants the nightingale,
Here is the forest home of reveling Dionysus with nymphs that nurse him,
Here, day after day, blooms the fair narcissus, fed on dew,
The flower that crowns the goddesses,
And here, as well, glows the golden crocus..." Sophocles

Centaurea attica ssp. megarensis (family: Compositae) – Life cycle This is one of the most delicate species of Centaurea. As the name implies it is endemic to Attica. Luckily enough you can easily find it when it flowers since the colour and shape of its flower are distinct, basically due to their vivid purple / magenta color. Mythology has it that the genus was named after Centaur Cheiron who tried, unsuccessfully, to heal his wounds with a species of this genus. In most places you can see the C. attica flowers from mid-March to mid-June, although individual flowers do not last more than a couple of weeks. In these photos we have captured all the life stages of the Centaurea attica flower, from developing to dying. Photos by Marina Parha and George J. Reclos Shooting Data: 1. Camera: Nikon D700 2.
