"A small green isle, it seem'd no more, scarce broader than my dungeon floor,
But in it there were three tall trees, and o'er it blew the mountain breeze,
And by it there were waters flowing, and on it there were young flowers growing,
Of gentle breath and hue." Lord Byron, George

Scabiosa hymettia (syn: Lomelosia hymettia); (family: Dipsacaceae; common name: Mourning-Bride, Pincushion Flower) – Life cycle This is a beautiful plant initially thought to be endemic to Mount Hymettus but was later found in many places in Greece. What we perceive as flower when fully developed, is in fact a complex formation consisting of smaller flowers. In these photos we captured all the stages from the formation till the death of the flower. Although it is always sad to see all this beauty lost, it is always reassuring to know that the following summer the place will be full of them once more.Photos by Marina Parha and George J.
